What is a Bitcoin Maximalist? (Crypto Wiki Entry)
Bitcoin was the original large decentralized cryptocurrency, however the crypto market now has many cryptocurrency competitors. Some of the cryptocurrencies have powerful spokespersons that critique Bitcoin or their other competitors. Bitcoin has its own champions with its most ardent supporters being referred to Bitcoin Maximalist.
A Bitcoin Maximalist generally feels that all other cryptocurrencies are simply distractions and scams and that only Bitcoin is a legitimate cryptocurrency. They are truest believers of Bitcoin's original mission and design. They often show disdain for altcoins and their supporters.
Bitcoin Maximalists have a reputation / stereotype for being angry, non-social, hardcore nerds who have little sympathy for those who do not understand the brilliance of Bitcoin and the advantages bestowed upon it due to its first mover advantage.
Bitcoin Maximlists also often point out that upgrades can be made to Bitcoin through a soft fork to integrate the proven ideas and concepts from altcoins.
One Bitcoin Maximalist Chris DeRose explain this thinking ain a video called Bitcoin Uncensored:
I don’t see that changing and if you look some of these other alt. coins and you look at some of these competitors and when you compare them in various terms transaction volume, power consumption etcetera, etcetera, the numbers are significantly lower to the degree of multiple levels of magnitude even. So I think that Bitcoin is definitely the most prosperous Coin and will remain so for these reasons.
One of the biggest critics of the Bitcoin Maximalist mind set is the founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin. Who effectively says that he disagrees with the movement on ethical grrounds in a paper posted on the Etereum org.
